• Power and Politics of Images | instrumental uses of photography and other measures for surveillance and control; images and the construction of human typologies.

• Visual Thinking | iconicity across symbolic systems; maps and diagrams; attempts at rethinking word-image-number relations.

• Distributed Mind | the role of symbols and tools in the constitution of the human mind.

• Scientific Imaging and Visualization | epistemic and evidential functions of visual instruments in science; use of medical imaging technologes for diagnostics and treatment; simulation.

WHAT'S.NEW

2012, May 15: Our special issue of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews on the topic of Computational Picturing is now available! Contributions from Richard Arias-Hernandez et al., Erin Kruger, Luis F. R. Murillo et al., Anders K. Madsen, Grace Eden et al., and Matt Spencer. This issue gathers a selection of the papers that were presented at the Visualisation in the Age of Computerisation conference last year (see below), which Annamaria Carusi, Timothy Webmoor, and I (the editors of this issue) co-organised together with Steve Woolgar. 2012, May 3: I gave a talk, "Technics of Thinking: Image, Word, Number," in The Incubator series organized by the Department of the History of Science, Harvard University.

2012, March 21: My article "Lines of Sight: Peirce on Diagrammatic Abstraction" is now published in Das bildnerische Denken von Charles S. Peirce. Edited by Franz Engels, Moritz Queisner and Tullio Viola. Berlin: Akademie Verlag. Read the abstract here.

2012, January 15: Leaving for the US for a six months stay as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of the History of Science, Harvard University.

2011, December 15: My assessment paper "Differential Images" is now published in What Is an Image? Edited by James Elkins and Maya Naef (Penn State University Press). This volume provides the transcript of the discussions during the Stone Summer Theory Institute at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, July 14-19, 2008. The main speakers were James Elkins (organizer), WJT Mitchell, Gottfried Boehm, Jacqueline Lichtenstein, and Marie-José Mondzain. The discussons also include comments from the Stone Summer Theory Institute fellows (I was one of those), and the transcript is followed by assessments papers by some of the discussants and a number of other international scholars.

2011, June 17: The exhibition Maktens bilder (Disciplinary Images) reopens in Trondheim. This time in Trondheim Courthouse Hall. Get a taste of the exhibition by visiting the internet version.

2011, June 8: Submitted application to the Research Council of Norway for a research project grant. Project title: Networked Neurosurgery. Have a look at the project summary and objectives.

2011, May 15: Deadline for submitting abstracts to the upcoming Media Acts conference in Trondheim, October 26-28, 2011. Keynotes: Jacques Rancière, James Elkins, Sara Danius, Frederik Tygstrup, Aud Sissel Hoel.

2011, March 25-26: Visualisation in the Age of Computerisation conference at Saïd Business School, Oxford University. Key note speakers: Peter Galison, Steve Woolgar and Michael Lynch.

2010, September 3: Great news! Our project application Picturing the Brain: Perspectives on Neuroimaging has succeeded. The project will be funded by the Research Council of Norway, more specifically by the ELSA programme. See research page for more information.
